CL2 and CL3 Cable Certifications

These ratings relate to the safety level for installation of wiring. CL2 and CL3 cables are always permitted for in-wall installation. Other ratings that quality for in-wall installation are: CM, CMP, CMR, CMG, CL2R, CL3R, CL2P, CL3P, and PLTC. For lower grades of cable:

CL2X and CL3X: these may be installed in metal raceways, or in a fireproof shaft (with firestops on each floor)
CL2X and CL3X under 1/4" in diameter: may be installed in 1-2 family residential dwelling without a raceway

CL2X and CL3X in non-concealed areas: may also be installed in multifamily dwellings
